About us

The story of Black Cat Coffee

The story of Black Cat Coffee began in our condo in Victoria, BC in the company of our senior black cat, Fez (or, “Black Cat”, as Ed called him). Our conversations as we sipped our coffee in the mornings often centred around our future and how we would live a life that was simpler, more sustainable, and “enough”. Starting a small business that would fulfill his desire for meaningful work following retirement from a career in the automotive industry and connect us with our community was a must for Ed. Growing our own food and sharing our harvest with friends and family was a goal of Molly’s. One thing was for sure: our dreams had outgrown the walls of our current home.

Our search for a larger property led us north of Victoria to the beautiful Cowichan Valley and our new home: an acreage with a house nestled in the trees.

We quickly set to work building our roastery and planning what to grow in our vegetable garden. We were roasting coffee for friends and family and starting our seeds in no time.

We said goodbye to Fez in the spring of 2021 after a quiet winter spent cuddled in front of the wood stove. Later that spring, we opened our hearts and home to two kittens from a local rescue. Violet and Dahlia now do a terrific job of running the house and both love to spend quiet mornings on a warm lap almost as much as Fez did.

Every day for us begins with a cup of Black Cat Coffee.
